Before I tell you my story I just want each and every bride to know I FEEL YOUR PAIN! I know for many brides finding ‘The Dress’ is a gush of overwhelming emotion as they envisage themselves marrying the love of their life. But for some it’s not… and I am one of them!
The dress has been sooooooo stressful. How you ladies go from shop to shop is beyond me. You must just LOVE shopping! Having said that, my shopping experience has been entirely different to that of brides who come to us looking for ‘The Dress’.
We do our buying for the following year’s collections around this time of year, so I had it in my mind I would wait to see what was coming in before deciding on my dress. BIG MISTAKE! 2015 buying season was ruled by the heart and not the head, so by December/January I had a shop full of very different styles to choose from. What made it worse was, as one collection arrived I would choose one, then another would arrive and I’d choose another one (or maybe two), then another collection arrived and I would choose another! It was just a nightmare. It doesn’t help that I am quite possibly the most indecisive person ever!
I had my bridesmaids and mum come a few times to give me their opinions but I still couldn’t decide. With time running out I had to make a decision. They were all lovely and I could have worn any of them and felt comfortable! while I didn’t get butterflies for any, I am thrilled with my decision! My seamstress, Sam is an absolute genius. She has spent hours turning my gown into the dress of my dreams (not that I could have told you what that was before hand!) I had my final fitting a couple of days ago and it has been totally transformed into something even more amazing than I could have imagined. I couldn’t be happier.
I will be revealing the gown to my bridesmaids, mum and nan this weekend! I think they will be more than a little surprised as it looks quite different.
My lesson has been not to have too many expectations. A lot of the gowns I thought I would like looked hideous on me. Also, don’t be afraid to put your own twist on a gown. I don’t think everyone will walk into a boutique and find ‘The Dress’, but that doesn’t mean there’s any underlying reason for that, I have heard all sorts – “why can’t I find ‘the dress’, it’s obviously not meant to be!”
Perhaps some of us may just need a bit of imagination to create a unique master piece just for you!!
With all that in mind, here are my dress shopping top tips.
- Be open minded – You may be surprised
- Don’t bring an entourage – the conflicting opinions ARE confusing!
- Wear good underwear
- Don’t try on too many, it just makes things harder
- Trust your bridal consultant. She probably knows her stuff
- Don’t try on gowns outside of your budget
- Don’t be afraid to say no! If there’s a BUT, then it’s not ‘The Dress’
