As alteration season is well under way here at Lisa Rose Bridal, I thought it the perfect time to write a blog to answer some of the questions we often get asked on the subject. Once you’ve found the wedding dress of your dreams, the perfect gown for your big day… it’s time to get it fitted to perfection! We are all so unique in our sizes and shapes that it is such an important part of your preparations to have your wedding dress professionally fitted just for you. This part of the process doesn’t have to be just about getting a snug fit, but can also allow you the opportunity to make the dress a true one off .
We employ an AMAZING seamstress called Samantha to work her magic on your special gown and there is really no limit to her skill. She is always striving to please our brides and loves creating bespoke changes to gowns to make them extra special!!
Some of our designers will offer a ‘made to measure’ service (at a cost). However, from experience we prefer to order your closest dress size and alter it in house closer to your wedding day. This allows us to achieve a much closer fit particularly for those brides who are either losing weight or whose body measurements fluctuate with the stress of planning a wedding (it happens!).
9/10 brides will require some kind of alteration. It may be something as simple as a button and loop to bustle your train, or it may be something more like a bodice or hem alteration. Therefore it is imperative that you consider alterations when shopping for your wedding gown.
So here’s what you need to know!
When and where will my fitting take place?
Right here in our beautiful wedding boutique with our highly experienced seamstress Samantha! Dependant on the level of work required we may go as close as 8 weeks to your wedding. (However, don’t worry if you don’t have this much time, we will fit you in!) Some of the more complex jobs, such as bespoke bodice changes may take longer. In these such instances we would ask you to come in around 12 weeks before, particularly if it’s a summer wedding.
What will I need to bring?
SHOES! We have to have these before we can alter your hem. If you are wearing any control underwear or support bras please also bring those along, and if you have chosen to wear a petticoat we will need this too!
Can I bring a guest?
Absolutely! Your fittings are an exciting time which should be shared with a loved one. We do ask that you only bring one guest to your alteration fittings though. It is a highly skilled job and the utmost concentration is required.
How many fittings will I need?
This will depend on what needs to be done. Some are lucky enough to have a first and a final while others may require three or four fittings.
How much will my alterations cost?
Well there is the million dollar question! It is so important that you allow a budget for your alterations when purchasing your gown. Our seamstress Sam has been with Lisa Rose Bridal for over 10 years. She was trained by the best and has worked on over 1000 wedding gowns during her time with us. With this experience we are able to offer a fixed price for your bodice and hem alterations. It will depend on which gown you have gone for as to what this price will be. Some wedding dresses with more detail or lace will naturally take longer and therefore may be a little more expensive than say a plain satin gown.
Bespoke alterations are charged for by the hour and these include things like neckline changes, having straps or jackets made, changes to the back i.e. zip to corset. Our bespoke service is very popular. I had some changes made to my own gown to make it a one off and I loved the creativity of the process. Sam loves to work her magic!! Look out for our bespoke alterations blog post coming soon…
I hope you have found this useful and we look forward to seeing you at the Old Chapel soon!
